About NANSNM
Our Story
From a single school of nursing in 1949 to a national association representing over 120,000 student nurses and midwives across Nigeria.
An Institution That Has Evolved, Endured, Rebuilt, and Continues to Grow
NANSNM is not merely an association—it is a movement rooted in the belief that student nurses and midwives deserve a collective voice, national representation, and meaningful opportunities for growth and impact.
The journey of NANSNM reflects the resilience and determination of generations of nursing students who understood that together, they could shape a better future for their profession and their communities.
Early Beginnings
The roots of student nurse organization trace back to the School of Nursing, Eleyele, Ibadan, Oyo State. From the earliest days, student nurses recognized the need for a collective voice to represent their interests and welfare.
Growth & Challenges
Over the decades, the movement expanded beyond Ibadan. The association experienced periods of growth and stagnation, evolving as Nigeria's nursing education landscape changed. Despite challenges, the spirit of collective student representation endured.
The Revival Movement
A pivotal revival movement began, led by student leaders including Comr. Adeyemo of the School of Nursing, Ido-Ekiti. This marked the beginning of a national restructuring effort that would reshape NANSNM for the modern era.
National Rebirth
The first national election after a long hiatus was held in Kogi State, with Comr. Sina Aiyelabowo emerging as National President. This election marked a critical turning point—the formal beginning of NANSNM's renewed national growth and institutional development.
Successive Leadership
Under the leadership of successive administrations—Comr. Richard, Comr. Abang Victor, Comr. Samalia Maiyaki, Comr. Obinna Cephas, and Comr. Rika Rimamjimtop—NANSNM continued to grow, expand its footprint, and strengthen its national structure.
Building As One
The current administration under Comr. Akinade A. Solomon, with the theme "Let's Build As One," focuses on constitutional reform, national unity, institutional strengthening, strategic partnerships, digital transformation, and international relevance—positioning NANSNM for its strongest chapter yet.
The Journey Continues
NANSNM's story is still being written—by every chapter, every state, every zone, and every member.
